Easy Crockpot Pulled Pork Sandwiches

I'm a meat eater but when it comes to BBQ sandwiches I prefer pork. Several years ago I wanted a pulled BBQ pork sandwich and figured there had to be a way to make it at home so armed with my crockpot and a pork roast I set to work. What I found that works is long cooking time and the right BBQ sauce. In our case the sauce of preference is KC Masterpiece. I've used others and something was always lacking but I did find Sweet Baby Rays was OK but only IF I added a bit more sugar.

Ingredients:
  • Pork Roast (any size, with or without bone)
  • Water (enough to fill half cover the roast)
  • BBQ Sauce (amount depends on the size of the roast)

Directions:

  • Place roast in the crockpot, fat side down. Add enough water to come about 1/2 way up in the crock pot. Cover and heat on low about 10 hours or longer.
  • When done remove roast from crockpot and place in a large mixing bowl or pot. Discard the liquid in the crockpot.  Stir the roast with a fork and it will fall apart and shred nicely. You can remove any fat with the fork and discard any bones.
  • When roast is completely shredded add BBQ sauce and mix well.

You can serve immediately or refrigerate for future use. You can also freeze leftovers for another meal.

This last time I made the sandwiches I used a 3.8 lb Boston Butt and started it around 9pm. At 7am I removed from the crockpot. I used 3- 18oz bottles of BBQ sauce (54oz total). This would make around 10-12 sandwiches.

I apologize for no pictures of the finished product but it was gone before I could get the camera out.  If I'd have thought I should have shown you the smiling faces of those who ate it.

I make pulled pork all the time. I don't know that I would use that much water, though. I would add a cup of liquid. The pork will make a lot of juice.

Try root beer or ginger ale.

This is a staple dish in the winter. And you can use the left overs as filling for enchiladas or tacos.
