Expandable Pet Pen by Richell USA

Richell
After I received and reviewed the Pet Playpen by Richell USA they asked if there was another product I'd like to review. I couldn't think of anything until I remembered I really wanted to get a larger pen for Stretch & Ellie. We don't trust them when we go out as Ellie likes to chew so we put them both in a plastic pet crate that they can stand or lay in but not do much else. With the addition of Rascal there really was no more room in there plus being 5 months old he's still a bit too playful and I didn't want to subject them to that in an enclosed area.

Richell USA has an Expandable Pet Pen with optional top and divider which solved all our needs.

Features:
  • Inter-locking corners for extra frame support
  • 12 1/4" X 15 3/4 inch wire door for easy pet access
  • 26" X 11 1/2 " lift n'lock side door
  • Expandable floor tray that expands with the pen
  • Hardwood construction

Since each of our dogs are less than 15 lbs I asked for the small pen that's recommended for dogs 8.8 to 26.4 lbs but there is a larger pen that will accomodate dogs up to 44 lbs. The small pen is 22.8 inches wide and 23.6 inches tall and expands from 35.4 inches to 60.6 inches in length. The larger pen is 30.3 inches wide, 27.6 inches tall and expands from 35.4 inches to 60.6 inches in length.

Stretch, Ellie & Rascal in the Richell Expandable Pet Pen

Pros:
  • The pen was fairly easy to assemble using a screwdriver. It's not as portable as I would have liked but we decided to put it in the guest room and when we have guests we can move it to another room fairly easily. It's portable enough for that but not something I'd want to be moving every day.
  • It's sturdy and the dark wood we received looks classy.
  • The bottom is sturdy plastic and a bit larger than the pen itself.  It comes in 2 sections which you lock together and this allows it to expand with the pen.
  • The main door opens sideways and is large enough for the puppies to enter and exit with no problem. The side door lifts up which is to allow easy access to food and water but we use that door for Rascal.
  • The optional top is in 2 sections which allows you to custom fit it to the length of the pen and it's easily removed for transport.
  • The optional divider is made of the same material as the pen itself and attaches fairly quickly. It can also be set in the location of your choice to customize the pen for your needs. The divider has a sliding door that can be left open if you are separating the main area from food and water or a pet training pad.
  • We used the divider to separate Rascal from Stretch and Ellie and it works just fine. The pen is expanded to the full 60.6 inches and we can fit a bed in both sides.

Cons:
  • The plastic clips that hold the divider in place are easy to break. Two of them snapped while I was trying to attach them for the first time. If these were larger dogs I could see them breaking if the dog jumped hard against the divider.

Overall I'm very pleased with the pen and would recommend it to anyone who wants a place for their pets that allows them room to move and stretch out but unless you have a very tiny dog I would get the optional top to prevent them from jumping or climbing out.

That's neat. It looks like it would make a decent rabbit cage, actually.

That is a nice Pet Pen!!

i just purchased one. It's functional and asthetic. To the person who posted this, the side door that swings up can be locked into place. You use the latches themselves which interlock with the wire side. Check it out, you will see what I'm talking about.

Thank you. I did find out about the side door latches accidentally a couple of weeks ago. I had the door flipped up and to my surprise it stayed there. So now I leave the door up and only close it when Rascal's inside.

The problem I'm having now is Rascal runs into the larger side with the girls and I have to open the door on the divider for him to his side. This isn't a problem unless I forget to close the side door first and he just runs out and back in with the girls again. I

I do love the pen though as it's been a lifesaver and Ellie, the 6 year old mini dachshund would never willingly go in her cage before. She'd run and hide if she saw it and I'd have to physically put her head inside and push her backside to get her all the way in. Now I say "get in the cage" and she'll go in on her own. Yesterday I heard a noise and Ellie & Rascal had gone in there to lay down.
